I recently had an early look at the new CLA 250+ Pinnacle during the Drive Revolution media event in Vancouver, Washington, and this generation is far more than an electric version of the previous CLA.

The CLA 250+ uses an 85-kWh battery and a single rear-mounted electric motor producing 268 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque. Mercedes estimates zero to 60 mph in about 6.6 seconds, so this is not positioned as the performance model. Instead, the 250+ is designed around efficiency, long-distance driving and rear-wheel-drive refinement. Buyers wanting more power and all-wheel drive can look farther up the CLA lineup.

Wheel choice matters, however, and larger wheels can reduce the number, so shoppers should check the exact rating of the vehicle they are considering rather than assuming every CLA 250+ delivers the maximum figure.

Charging capability is another strength. The CLA uses an 800-volt electrical architecture and can accept up to 320 kW of DC fast charging. Under ideal conditions, Mercedes says it can add roughly 200 miles of range in about 10 minutes, while a 10-to-80-percent charge can take around 22 minutes. A native NACS charging port should also make public charging more convenient for U.S. buyers.

Inside, the Pinnacle trim places a heavy emphasis on technology. The available MBUX Superscreen combines a 10.25-inch digital instrument display with a 14-inch center touchscreen and another 14-inch passenger display. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, along with Mercedes’ latest MBUX interface and Google-based technology. Some buyers will love the wall-of-screens approach, while others may prefer a simpler dashboard, so this is one interior worth experiencing before buying.

Rear-seat room is usable, but the CLA is still a relatively compact luxury sedan. Taller adults may find rear headroom and entry tighter than in a larger sedan or electric crossover. Cargo space is around 10 cubic feet in the rear, and there is also a small front trunk that can handle charging cables and smaller items. For a commuter or road-trip sedan, the packaging should be adequate, but buyers needing maximum family or cargo space may prefer an SUV.

One of the CLA’s more unusual engineering features is its two-speed rear transmission. The lower gear helps with acceleration, while the taller second gear is designed to improve efficiency at highway speeds. That helps explain how Mercedes is extracting so much range from an 85-kWh battery without relying on an enormous battery pack.

The biggest question with the Pinnacle is value. The CLA 250+ starts around the $50,000 range, but options such as the Pinnacle package, larger wheels, AMG appearance upgrades, premium audio and other luxury equipment can move the price into the low-$60,000 range. If range and value are your priorities, a more lightly optioned CLA 250+ may make more sense. If you want the full technology and luxury experience, the Pinnacle becomes much easier to justify.

If you are cross-shopping, I would also look at the Tesla Model 3, BMW i4 and Lexus ES 350e. Tesla emphasizes efficiency and charging access, BMW brings more traditional sport-sedan character, and Lexus leans toward comfort and refinement. The Mercedes argument is the combination of long range, very fast charging, premium technology and an entry point that remains competitive for a luxury EV.
