2026 Hyundai Venue SEL: Is This Still One of the Best Cheap SUVs? (plus Video) on Everyman Driver

The 2026 Hyundai Venue SEL remains one of the least expensive new SUVs on the market, and that alone makes it worth a look for budget-focused shoppers. I recently had an early look at the Venue SEL during the Drive Revolution media event in Vancouver, Washington, and the appeal is pretty straightforward: simple transportation, useful equipment and a price that stays well below many larger crossovers.

Power comes from a 1.6-liter four-cylinder producing 121 horsepower and 113 lb-ft of torque, paired with Hyundai’s Intelligent Variable Transmission. Every Venue is front-wheel drive, and there is no AWD option. Fuel economy is rated at roughly 29 mpg city, 33 highway and 31 combined, so this is much more about efficiency and affordability than performance.

If the 2026 Hyundai Venue is on your shopping list, compare current dealer pricing and local offers at Quotes.EverymanDriver.com before choosing between the SE and SEL. With a relatively small price gap between the two trims, the actual deal in your area could make the better-equipped SEL the more attractive value.

The SEL is where the Venue starts to feel less basic. It adds features such as heated front seats, wireless phone charging, automatic climate control, proximity key with push-button start, a power sunroof and larger alloy wheels. You also get an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which is a solid amount of equipment for a vehicle in this price range.

Safety equipment is another reason the Venue deserves attention. Standard features include forward collision avoidance, lane keeping assist, driver attention warning and automatic high beams. The SEL adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic warning, making it the more complete choice for buyers who want a little more confidence in daily traffic.

Passenger and cargo space are modest, as you would expect from Hyundai’s smallest SUV. The Venue seats five, but the rear seat is better suited to kids or occasional adult passengers than long road trips. With the rear seats folded, maximum cargo capacity is roughly 32 cubic feet, which is enough for groceries, luggage and everyday gear without making the vehicle difficult to park or maneuver.

The biggest limitation is capability. There is no AWD option, no turbocharged engine and no abundance of power for highway passing or mountain driving. Buyers who regularly deal with snow, steep grades or full loads of passengers should make sure 121 horsepower and front-wheel drive are enough for the way they actually use a vehicle.

The trim decision is fairly simple. The Venue SE starts at just over $20,000, while the SEL comes in around the low-$22,000 range before destination. For the extra money, the SEL adds enough comfort, convenience and safety equipment that it may be the more sensible choice for buyers planning to keep the vehicle for several years.

If you are cross-shopping, I would also look at the Nissan Kicks, Chevrolet Trax and Hyundai Kona. Some competitors give you more power, more space or available AWD, while the Venue’s strongest argument remains its low purchase price, compact size and relatively generous equipment for the money.

The bottom line is that the 2026 Hyundai Venue SEL makes the most sense for buyers who want inexpensive, efficient transportation in a small SUV package and do not need AWD or strong acceleration. The SEL adds enough useful equipment to justify the modest step up from the base model for many shoppers.
