The 2014 Ford Explorer builds on its heritage as the full-size SUV leader with outstanding capability, convenience and comfort. Key advancements introduced on Ford Explorer Sport, new for the 2013 model year, now are available on the 2014 Ford Explorer. The Explorer is offered in four trim levels: base, XLT, Limited and Sport. It’s also available in front-wheel and all-wheel drive. The new changes are minor for 2014. The Explorer now has standard automatic headlights on all trim levels and second-row heated seats standard on the Limited trim level.
You have three engine choices under the hood of the Explorer. Standard is a 290-hp, 3.5-liter V6. There’s also a smaller, turbocharged 4-cylinder EcoBoost engine which boasts a 28 mile per gallon fuel economy rating on the highway. The Sport model features a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost good for 365-hp. All 2014 Explorer models have a 6-speed automatic transmission. Generally speaking, the estimated fuel economy rating is 17 miles per gallon in the city and 23 miles per gallon on the highway.
The Explorer weighs approximately 4,800 pounds and has a towing capacity rating of 2,000 pounds with the 4-cylinder and up to 5,000 pounds on the V6. The fuel tank is 18.6 gallons and the recommended fuel type is regular, though premium is recommended for the EcoBoost variants.
