New Crossover SUV Review: 2014 BMW X1 on Everyman Driver

Fallback Image

2014 BMW X1 xDrive28i on Everyman Driver with Dave EricksonThe X1 is one of the smallest crossover sport utility vehicles on the market today. It’s a compact five passenger vehicle but getting more than two full size adults in the back will be challenging. While largely unchanged for 2014, it now includes BMW Assist eCall and BMW TeleService as standard.

The X1 is available in three trim levels: sDrive28i, xDrive28i and an xDrive35i. Under the hood of the 28i models is a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine that produces 240-hp and 260 lb-ft torque. Both engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The estimated fuel economy on the AWD version is 22 miles per gallon in the city and 33 miles per gallon on the highway. The rear wheel drive gets two miles per gallon better in the city and one better on the highway.

The xDrive35i gets a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 with 300-hp and 300 lb-ft of torque and is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy estimates stand at 18 miles per gallon in the city and 27 miles per gallon on the highway. The X1 weighs approximately 3,800 pounds and has a towing capacity of 3,000 pound. The fuel tank is 16.6 gallons and the recommended fuel type is premium.

A few of the vehicles that compete with the X1 include the Buick Encore, Ford Escape, Mini Cooper Countryman and Volkswagen Tiguan.

Here’s how the X1 scored on a scale of Good, Acceptable, Marginal and Poor according to 2014 Crash Test Ratings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety: Small Overlap Front, Marginal. Front Moderate Overlap, Good. Side Impact, Good. Roof Strength, Good. Head Restraints & Seats, Good.

The MSRP range is between $31,725 and $39,525. BMW offers a basic warranty of 4 years/50,000 miles.
