Mazda Statement Regarding 2016 Model Year MX-5 Miata Vehicles

Mazda North American Operations has filed a Part 573 notification with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for a safety defect on certain 2016 Model Year Mazda MX-5 Miata vehicles. During normal use, an undercover and related metal bracket may separate from the vehicle while driving.  Mazda’s recall number is 3619F.

Improper maintenance of a weld contact pin of the spot friction welding machine may result in a decrease in weld strength over time during production. The metal bracket may fall off the vehicle, creating a road hazard for other drivers and increasing the risk of a crash. Drivers will hear a metallic rattle noise prior to complete separation.

Approximately 2,476 vehicles are affected.

No accidents, injuries, or deaths have been reported from the field to date as a result of this defect.
