Just Arrived: 2020 Chevrolet Colorado on Everyman Driver

Introducing the 2020 Chevrolet Colorado. This is Silverado’s little brother. A midsize pickup truck for those that don’t need all the capability and size associated with those full-size heavy-duty trucks.  For those of you who aren’t familiar with my just arrived format, this is not a review. This is a first take, walk-around giving you a first impression point of view of this midsize pickup truck. So, I’m going to start with some stats. We’ve got two cab options, two bed options, three engines available and five trim levels. I’m not gonna go over all of them but I will go over a few.

Let’s begin with the powertrain.  There’s the base four-cylinder, an optional V6 which we have and also a diesel option.  So depending on what you want to tow and your fuel economy, I’m sure you’ll go with the one that best fits your needs  Ours is a 3.6 liter V6 mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. That base 2.5 liter 4-cylinder comes with a 6-speed manual transmission. Our is the 8-speed automatic good for 308 horsepower and 275 pound feet of torque.  The diesel option offers a 2.8 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with 181 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque.

I mentioned to cab styles as well.  There’s the extended cab, which we have and also a crew cab.  The crew cab offers four doors. Old-school truck loyalists will appreciate having key to start up the engine verses a push button start.  This, in my opinion helps maintain that traditional truck look, feel and vibe. It’s simple and sturdy. Everything you need in a midsize. The instrument cluster features your RPMs on the left, MPG on the right.  Real straightforward and easy to see. It may be a traditional truck but when it comes to technology it is up to date. We have Apple Carplay and Android Auto available. I brought my iPhone and hooked it up to the USB port.  There are two of them by the way. With your phone hooked up you can listen to your podcast, used Google Maps and so on. The infotainment display is an 8 inch touch screen with a backup camera you can see exactly where you are.  There’s also storage in the center console. Our extended cab is best for additional storage or kids complete with a pair of cup holders in the middle. Adults will be better off with the crew cab option.

As far as hauling space, there are two bed options.  There’s a 5-footer, 62 inches and a 6-footer, with measures 74 inches.  The back window by the way, does slide open. Also, all the Colorado’s have extra tailgate side steps so you can get into the back a lot of easier.  Let’s talk towing now. In the base Colorado you can tow 3,500 pounds. With the v6 which we have, you can tow 7,000 pounds and with the optional diesel, 7,700 pounds.  Our vehicles includes the RST Special Edition package which includes those 20-inch black painted aluminum wheels, the spray-on bedliner, the Chevrolet lettered grill which it looks pretty cool in the front, plus that black bowtie logo in the back on the tailgate. That RST special edition package is just under $3,000.

Best case fuel economy scenario is 20 mg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.  The MSRP starting price, under $27,000.
