The 2014 Mazda 6 mid-size sedan is the latest vehicle in the brand’s line up to feature SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY. That’s the umbrella term for a number of of performance-oriented, transmission, body and chassis, and fuel-saving engine components. But don’t buy this car just because Mazda uses fancy terms and catchy tag lines, buy this car if you’re looking for affordability, style and fuel economy.
Under this broad hood is a SKYACTIV-G 2.5-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission that produces 184 horsepower and 185 lb-ft. Fuel economy is pretty darn good. It’s rated at 26 miles per gallon in the city and up to 38 on the highway. Mazda is going for the 30 mile per gallon average in mixed driving. I’m happy to report that I achieved 31 miles per gallon during my week of driving the 2014 Mazda6.
The front wheel drive set up in the Mazda6 is surprisingly powerful. If you slam on the gas from a standstill, hang on. It’ll really pull you forward in a hurry. Dave Erickson from Everyman Driver and I recently went head to head in a 0-60 mph battle of the sexes to see who could achieve the lowest average time after five attempts. Here’s how it went down.
